Action Plan: Pumping at work or school

Use this Action Plan to make sure you are set up for success as you return to work or school.

1. Talk to your boss

  • It is best to meet with your boss well before you take time off for delivery.

  • Clearly communicate your intention to pump at work and your appreciation for their support.

  • Work together with your boss to create a schedule that supports your pumping.

  •  If needed, educate your boss on your rights.

If you are a student, contact your school's health center.

  • Find out if they have any lactation rooms for students.

  • Work with the center to make sure you have what you need.

2. Identify where you will pump

  • Be certain the space allows for good hygiene.

  • Do you have access to soap and hot water?

3. Determine where you can store your supplies while at work

  • Will you have access to a refrigerator?

  • Will you be able to properly clean your pump at work?

4. Gather your supplies

  • Pump and kit

  • Containers to store the milk you have pumped

  • An insulated bag to store and transport your pumped milk

  • Ice packs to keep your milk cold (if you will not have a refrigerator you can use)

  • Reusable or disposable pads

If you do not have access to soap and hot water:

  • Hand sanitizer

  • Have extra pump parts to switch out for each pumping session
