Microwave cooking: Heat to a safe temperature

Cooking pre-prepared food in a microwave? Keep the following tips in mind.

1

Double-check that your food should be microwaved.

Some pre-prepared food can only be cooked in a conventional oven.

2

Always read and follow the cooking instructions on the package.

This includes instructions about stirring, covering, and allowing food to rest. Do not skip any steps.

3

Look on the package for what microwave wattage is required.

Every microwave has a specific wattage. This wattage is usually found on the inside of the microwave door. It may also be found on the serial number plate, or in the owner's manual. If your microwave wattage is lower than the microwave wattage listed on the food package, adjust the cooking time. You will need to cook your food longer if your wattage is lower than recommended.

4

Unless the packaging says it is okay, do not eat microwaveable foods without cooking them.

This is because they may contain raw ingredients. Most microwaveable convenience foods must be cooked before eating.

5

Use a food thermometer to test that food has been heated to a safe temperature.

The food package will often tell you what the safe temperature is. Or, you can refer to this Safe Minimum Cooking Temperatures Chart. Use the food thermometer in several places to make sure the food is safe throughout.

What about reheating foods?

Reheating leftovers or other foods that have already been cooked once? Make sure to cook it until steaming hot. Stir halfway to avoid cold spots! Leftovers should be heated to an internal temperature of 165° F.
