Tips for vegetarians

Tips for building meals high in protein:

  • Cook beans, peas, and lentils to offer at most meals.
  • Substitute tofu in place of meat.
  • Add nuts or seeds to baked goods, hot cereal, or salads.
  • Snack on veggies and hummus, fruit with dairy or soy yogurt, or veggies and nut butter.
  • Add eggs or dairy to meals or snacks.
  • There are nutrients your family might miss out on if they don't eat animal foods. For example, vitamin B12 only comes from animal foods. If you're wondering how to meet your family's needs, talk with your health care provider. Or speak with a Registered Dietitian at your WIC clinic.

Nuts and seeds are a choking hazard and should not be given to children under 4. Finely minced is okay to give.
