What foods should not touch? A quick guide to food separation

Raw pork sits alone on a cutting board.

Raw meat, seafood, fish, poultry, and eggs should not come in contact with:

  • Ready-to-eat fruits

  • Ready-to-eat vegetables

  • Any other foods that will not be cooked before eating

Remember to keep these foods separate...

  • In your shopping cart at the grocery store
  • In separate bags at checkout
  • In your refrigerator
  • When preparing food

Keep all foods separate from household chemicals.

Caution

When preparing food, take special care to avoid cross-contamination. Thoroughly wash any surfaces or utensils (including knives) that have touched raw meat, seafood, fish, poultry, or eggs. Wash plates, surfaces, and utensils with hot soapy water for at least 20 seconds before using them for any other food.
