Screening:
A screening test for low iron happens during or before WIC certification appointments. It may happen at your WIC site or your health care provider's office. The screening is a blood test, usually done by a finger prick. It tests for either the amount of red blood cells (hematocrit), or a protein in the red blood cells (hemoglobin).
What to expect from WIC staff:
If you or your child have a low hemoglobin or hematocrit, this does not always mean low iron. WIC staff cannot diagnose low iron or prescribe iron supplements. They will refer you to a health care provider. Your WIC staff will also help you learn more about iron foods for you and your family.
What to expect from your health care provider if you are referred:
They may do more blood testing to see if you or your child have iron deficiency. If needed, they will offer treatment. This may include iron pills or drops, and eating more foods high in iron. Your provider will be able to answer your questions.
