Your 1-year-old should be able to eat the same foods you offer the rest of the family. But it’s important to keep safety in mind, too. Here are some tips to follow to keep your child’s food healthy and safe:

Tips to Safely Introduce New Foods

  • Offer new foods slowly. Wait 3-5 days before introducing another new food.

  • Always offer your child solid foods while they are sitting down and supervised. The risk of choking is higher if your child is walking, running, or eating unsupervised. Plus, it is much easier to role model behavior when you are sitting with them.

  • Talk to your child’s health care provider as soon as possible if you think your child has an allergy to any foods.

Some Good Choices for 1-Year-Olds

  • Chopped vegetables, cooked to make softer if necessary
  • Chopped fruits
  • Cooked brown rice, pieces of pasta, pieces of whole-grain bread, or other grains
  • Dairy foods like pieces of cheese, yogurt, and cottage cheese
  • Chopped and bite-sized pieces of soft meat
