Time Together: Getting to know what your child likes

Different children have different ways they like to move. While one child may enjoy running, another may like kicking a ball! One child may like to dance, and another may like to climb. So, how can you know what type of activity your child likes? This resource can help.

Idea #1: Try different activities.

Trying different activities is a great way to see what your child responds to. As your child plays, what do you notice? Are they smiling? Do they want to stop, or do they want to keep going? If your child likes the activity they do one day, give them the chance to try it again the next week.

Idea #2: Get curious.

If your child is old enough, you can ask them what type of activities they like! Choose a time when your child is in a happy, talkative mood. Then, try one of the following questions. Or, other questions that you think of!

What’s your favorite thing to do at the playground?

Do you want to go swimming this summer?

Want to show me how far you can kick a ball?

What’s your favorite music to dance to?

Idea #3: Set aside time each day, just for them.

Make a commitment to spend time every day with your child, doing whatever they want to do. This can be 5 minutes per day, or more if you have more time! It might be playing with toys, digging in the yard, or jumping up and down. Whatever it is (as long as it’s safe) let them choose. Over time, you may notice new things about your child!
