How to save money on protein foods not covered by WIC.
- At the grocery store
> Buy in bulk.> Look for sale options.
> Check canned and frozen seafood options.
In your area - if it’s possible
> Gather tree nuts.
In safe, local waters
> Catch fish or shellfish, if licensed.
> Check local fish advisories before eating fish caught. Search your state’s website on this list. [Opens in a new tab; make sure to come back to this resource tab to complete the lesson].
In the wilderness
> Hunt for local wild game meat, if licensed.
> Wild game meat is naturally grown and lean.
> Wild game meat is a lower cost than store-bought meat.
For example:
> When deer hunting, the license and "tags" cost around 40 to 50 dollars.
> A deer has between 50-100 pounds of meat.
> Final cost of wild game meat is 0.50 cents to 1.00 dollar per pound.
