The “Baby Blues”; What you need to know

“Baby blues” can start about 2-3 days after childbirth and can last up to 2 weeks.
“Baby blues” usually go away on their own.

If you feel sad, irritable, or anxious for more than 2 weeks - call your healthcare provider. They can screen you for postpartum depression and provide support and referrals.

What can I do if I have “baby blues”?
  • Turn off screens, close your eyes, and rest for 30 minutes!
  • Connect with family and friends.
  • Refuel your body with veggies and fruits as snacks.
  • Get some sunshine and fresh air.
  • Feel content with accomplishing one thing a day.
  • Breast or chestfeed. When you do, your body makes hormones that reduce stress and bring calmness. If breast or chestfeeding is causing you stress, talk to your WIC staff or lactation support.
  • Add small amounts of physical activity to your day. Moving the body boosts your mood and even your energy level! Add small amounts of physical activity with these ideas:
    > Clean
    > Dance
    > Practice yoga
    > Stretch
    > Play with the kids in the park
    > Walk the dog
    > Push the kids in a stroller
What next?

Celebrate your healthy actions!
After completing an activity, find a way to reward yourself!
Rewards don't have to cost money and could include taking the time to:

  • Call a friend
  • Watch your favorite show
  • Read
  • Do what brings you joy
